Cocaine

Cocaine is a crystalline alkaloid that is obtained from the leaves of the coca plant. It is both a stimulant of the central nervous system, an appetite suppressant, and a topical anesthetic. Because of the way it affects the mesolimbic reward pathway, cocaine is addictive.

Its effects can last from 20 minutes to several hours, depending upon the dosage, purity and method of administration. Effects have been described as a euphoric sense of happiness and increased energy. Sexual interest and pleasure can be amplified. Side effects can include twitching, paranoia and impotence, which usually increase with frequent usage. Cocaine can be snorted, injected or smoked.

Also known as: blow, nose candy, coke or snow.

Crack cocaine is cocaine hydrochloride powder that has been processed to form a rock crystal that is then usually smoked. It is the most addicted form of cocaine.

Also known as: rock, hard, iron, cavvy, base or crack.
